2013 – 2014 Premiere Season
During our Premiere Season in 2013, ChamberMusicNY presented The Complete String Quartets of Benjamin Britten. These free concerts brought hundreds of program members from New York City community service groups including the USO-Metropolitan NY, Goddard Riverside Community Center, Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center, Project Open, Greenwich House, Third Street Music School Settlement, Fountain House, and other NY groups. Also joining us for the three concerts at Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium were string students from Juilliard, Columbia University, Manhattan School of Music and LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. In addition, CMNY brought the string quartet into the Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center on West 65th Street on a sunny day in November to play Britten for the Thursday Seniors Lunch Concert.
This celebration of Benjamin Britten’s quartet music was part of the worldwide Britten 100 centenary and ChamberMusicNY received planning assistance from the Britten-Pears Foundation. Over the course of the season, and culminating in the final concert’s three hour marathon, all eight of Britten’s string quartets were performed. These compositions took us from Britten at age 15 through his young adulthood, middle age, and finishing two year before his passing with his final quartet. The string quartets serve as a tour of Britten’s compositional voice and development, but until our season, have never all been performed in a set, let alone in a single evening. ChamberMusicNY is very proud to have brought all eight of these string quartets to hundreds of New Yorkers for the very first time.
